Washroom to Tatami
About the Project
A previously unused bathroom has been transformed into a stylish tatami reading room through a thoughtful redesign.
The client, a devout Buddhist with a unique taste for bold, vintage-inspired colors, envisioned a space that reflects her aesthetic preferences. To meet her needs, we chose green as the primary color, complemented by vibrant embroidered cushions and pillows, adding warmth and vitality to the room.
Our design and construction team handled the entire process on-site, ensuring every inch of the space was utilized effectively. The renovation began by replacing the narrow doorway with a wide arched entrance, creating a sense of openness. The existing bathroom layout was fully repurposed, with custom-built shelves installed along the walls, integrated with LED lighting to provide a bright and layered ambiance.
The original bathroom, as shown in the photo, had a narrow doorway that made the entire space feel cramped and confined.
The initial design focused on simplicity, removing the complex bathroom structure and cleverly concealing it with bookshelves. An open arched doorway was added to transform the space into a neat and orderly square layout, radiating a sense of balance and elegance.
The warm-toned LED strip lighting breathes life into the green space, making the space more cosy.
We removed the bathroom door and the adjoining wall, replacing it with an open, arched doorway. The widened view instantly made the space feel brighter and more open.
In this space, we installed the wooden base for the tatami area. The photo shows the process of sanding and applying a white primer in preparation for the green topcoat.
Crafting custom furniture on-site is a true test of skill. From building the wooden framework and meticulous sanding to priming and painting, every step demands the expertise of craftsmen who have honed their techniques over many years.
This newly designed corner has become an ideal retreat for daily relaxation—an invaluable addition in London, where space is at a premium.
